World Watercolour Month 2023

Updated: Jul 2, 2023

World watercolour month is a 31 day challenge hosted by Doodlewash in the month of July. It encourages artists of all levels to paint with watercolour every day in July and share their work with the world.
World watercolour month 2023 begins

I've attempted this challenge a few times but I've never been able to make it stick. So armed with Austin Kleon's Suck Less calendar, I think I'm going to go brave for yet another time.

30x30 direct watercolour paintings

Instead of being all ambitious completing large polished paintings every day, I did some mini paintings (approximately 2x3 inches) and if I'm honest, I quite enjoyed them. For world watercolour month 2023, I'm going to adopt the same approach but take the size of the paintings up a notch to 5x7 inches. Coming off of another challenge I have mixed feelings, I'm a bit tired, but also a bit pumped to keep the momentum going

About WWM

Charlie O’Shields, the creator of Doodlewash®, and host of the Sketching Stuff podcast, founded World Watercolor Month in 2016. It’s a month to inspire people to paint with watercolour while raising awareness for the importance of art and creativity in the world. Anyone can join the celebration from master watercolorists to artists just starting out with watercolour.

How to participate

Grab some watercolors and make a watercolor painting or sketch each day during the month (or whenever you can join in), and share your work online using the hashtag #WorldWatercolorMonth

You can:

  • TAKE THE ULTIMATE CHALLENGE: 31 Watercolor Paintings in 31 Days! (pick me!)

  • Paint with friends

  • Give the medium a try for the first time

  • Paint with the kids, yours or someone else's!

  • Support a watercolor artist you enjoy by purchasing one of their beautiful paintings

  • Share the watercolor work of other artists you love

  • Consider donating to the International Child Art Foundation!

My Goal

I've followed the Doodlewash blog for some time, probably circa 2017. I've never been able to stick to prompts though so I've always been a failure at the monthly challenge, despite knowing that sticking to the prompts is not mandatory. So in the spirit of several creators I follow and whose content I enjoy I am going to lower the bar, paint what I can (I hate prompts) and just make my main goal to paint every day.

I'm going to "just make stuff" as my friend over at Wheezy News says in this video as well as the resource Austin Kleon pointed me to this week in his newsletter.

No need for anything fancy, just paint, make the videos where I can and post them on TikTok as I've been doing. Leave it at that. At the end of it I definitely expect to suck less and also overcome this art funk, get paintings done and update my shop FINALLY.

Let's get this show on the road.
